Patanjali Yoga Sutras 1.12

Abhyasa is practice, vairagya is non-attachments, abhyam refers to together, and tan means their(of the five mental modifications of Patanjali), and nirodah means to control or cessation.

Abhyasa-Vairagyabhyam- Tan-Nirodhah meaning

“Practice by non-attachment thus we can control our mental activates”

Practicing Vairagya or non-attachment can help you successfully control the five modulations of themind as explained in the previous Patanjali yoga sutras. The human mind is engaged inthe outside world all the time. The human mind wavers every time, just as the waterflows seamlessly. We can reduce the wavering thoughts (which we struggle to gaincontrol over) through the practice of non-attachment(vairagyabhyasa).

The most simple version of the Sutra is that the persistent practice of non-attachments

and dispassion can help you establish a mental and emotional equilibrium in life. You canstay happy, fulfilled, and mature throughout your life. We can anticipate, that many ofus are not really clear about the concept of non-attachments. Let us look into the non-attachment perspectives in detail.

What comes to your mind when you think of the word attachment? Attachment is like aknot, which is very difficult to untangle. Attachment can be towards anything thatbelongs to a materialistic world, say your family affections members, money, wealth,food, ego, inferiority complex, character, behaviour, attitude, addition, past, and futurelife, or anything else.

A well-known proverb in India, adhikamayalamruthumvisham, however desirable be the commodity, like the divine nectar which can confer immortality will transform into a poison when consumed beyond the limits.

To translate the idea, everything is at its best, only when they are within limits. Food,sleep, love, wealth, money, etc.

How to practice vairagya or Non-attachment?

For example, we all love good food. But once you start overeating, it turns poisonous to your body. Overthinking is equal to overeating; it will make us psychopaths. Overthinking causes restlessness and related problems in human beings. The issues related to overthinking are mainly due to past incidents which are highly affected in our present life. With the help of the Vairagya (non-attachment) practice of Yoga Shastra, we can cure this problem completely.

It is important to practice vairagya in our attachments and relationships also. The absence of our beloved ones will make us sorrowful due to our attachment to this particular person. So, it is relevant to maintain our mental happiness with or without the person’s presence. To make this process easy, we should practice vairagya(non-attachment) in our relationships on a daily basis. Practicing vairagya will help us to maintain mental equilibrium and balancingof our life. Nothing is permanent in this universe even our body as it is perishable one day. So, if we don’t practice non-attachment, the absence of a particular person will lead to self-destruction as well as there are high chances for mental anomalies. Along with the vairagya practice, one can form a narrow gap between the attached persons with the help of the attached-detachment practice which is also referred to as the neutral mind. As a result, people can be free from over-attachment. This process is also applicable to every matter of human life such as the usage of drugs, consumption of alcohol, sleep, sex, etc. The person who practices vairagya or non-attachment habits will survive any issues related to over-attachment.

Other than making a huge effort to overcome the catastrophe which affected our life,  it is more reliable to practice non-attachment, which helps us to survive any disastrous situation. Even the pain or misery affects by the death or permeant quit of any of our beloved people can be conveniently overcome by this practice.

For helping people with issues concerned with relationships and temporal struggles, the yogic science (shastra) put forwards a practice called vairagya (non-attachment).

Atha Yoganushasanam is the first sutra (thread) compiled in the authoritative text of Yoga – Patanjali Yoga Sutra. Patanjali Yoga Sutra is a collection of 196 Sanskrit Sutras on the theory and practice of Yoga put together by the Indian sage Patanjali between 500 BC and AD400. These “threads” of wisdom offer us guidelines for living a meaningful and purposeful life. 

The meaning of “Atha Yoga Anushasanam” is “Now We Begin the Exposition to Yoga.”

 Explanation on Atha Yoga Anushasanam

Our soul dissolves into atoms and pervades our body or physical body innumerable and very subtle forms. Yoga is the awakening or unification of the seed of divinity or greater being within you. The essentials of yoga is the learning to distinguish your insight or awareness from your essence. It will let you submerge yourself in light of absolute unity. From the moment you understand your essence and absolute unity, you will start to experience ecstasy or bliss. This is what is meant by yoga anushasanam. Pathanjali’s teaching mentions that this process is the beginning of yoga anushasanam. The word Anu from anushasanam means “atom”. Shasanam means “Instruction”. Yoga means “union”, a union of the soul and the Supreme Spirit.

The sage Patanjali never used any words without having in-depth meaning. Every word he used was meaningful. Take one sutra from the Yoga Sutras, and you can write a book grasping the implications conveyed in it. The Sage Patanjali synthesised and organised knowledge about Yoga from much older traditions.

Patanjali’s first teaching, Atha Yoga Anushasanam, means “now”, the practice of yoga begins”, and it is time to reveal the secrets of Yoga. In the sutra of Atha Yoga Anushasana, Patanjali teach us, “Anyone can practice and experience Yoga realizethat yoga is a way of life. There is always a other dimension within a person. It would be best if you were willing look deeperinto your inner nature to discover it.

The experiences we have come across in the past might be causing fear and depression. Many incidents in our life keep disturbing us in our present life, which invokes anxiety about the future. Our life becomes more miserable, which makes us mentally and physically ill.

Patanjali teaches us that “life starts at this moment”. We see and experience many things that appeal to our senses every day. But we are unable to enjoy these things in their fullness. The primary reason behind this problem is our anxieties and fears of the past and the present. This condition will make you sorrowed and depressed.

For example, imagine that you are travelling through a beautiful place and cannot enjoy its beauty. Although many exciting things happen, you never see or appreciate them. It is because your mind unconsciously worries about the past and the present. It is stamping the fact that you live an unconscious life.

The wisdom you need is all around you in every form of nature. Nature can conceal as well as reveal. Our life has changed from the past. That is why we call it the past. You still live in fear and depression of your past. Your future is not all bothering you. It is only hypothetical or imagination. There you’re residing with worries and anxieties. In this way, your life becomes more miserable. The meaning or translation of  “Atha Yoga Anushasanam” in english is a Yoga Sutra that teaches us how to completely relieve our mind from the fears of the past and the anxieties of the future.

‘Samyama’ is the synchronous exercising of three paramount sadhanas (spiritual practices) of Ashtanga Yoga in Patanjali Yoga sutra. These three uppermost sadhanas are Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (The highest state of consciousness). Practicing Samyama will help to attain firm and tremendous knowledge on any matter. If yogi practices and attains success in Samyama, he will experience the enlightenment of spiritual wisdom. This spiritual wisdom is termed as Adhyatmaprasadham (spiritual grace) in Patanjali Yoga Sutra. The first step for practicing Samyama is to focus on Sthula (tangible, substantial) objects and then shifting the focus to Sukshma (subtle, insubstantial) objects. In this way, a yogi must focus his mind step by step to practice Samyama.

Three limbs (practices) out of eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga namely, Dharna (concentration), Dhyana (meditational absorption), and Samadhi (The highest state of consciousness ) are internal practices and works to achieve ultimate power and highest wisdom; than other limbs namely, Yama (external discipline), Niyama (internal discipline), Asana (posture), Pranayama (breath control) and Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), which works preparation to do Samyama. A yogi attains Yoga siddhi (Supernatural power or abilities) by practicing these internal practices of Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.

When “Samyama” practices reach its heights, Samskaras (some components of all that we do and experience through our intelligence, mind and senses will remain with us. Such countless collection of good and bad experience components are called Samskaras) will unite with Samadhi in a way that it cannot reoccur and the Poorva Samskara will get refined. The mind will then shift from normal thinking to focused thinking, and thereafter enter into a state which will control all your thoughts. This transformation of the mind is called Parinama Samadhi. Whatever transformation the mind undergoes here is called Ekagratha Parinamam (transformation of one-pointedness). Then, only the weakened human thoughts and the thriving Samadhi thoughts will develop in mind.

The transformation state that Patanjali intends is not confined only to yogi but could be achieved by every substance in the world. This is because every substance is Thrigunamayam (the combination of three qualities) i.e. Thamass (darkness), Rajas (passion), and Sattva (pure) gunas (qualities). These qualities (gunas) have an evolutionary nature. According to Samkhya philosophy and Science of Yoga, no matter is created in the world. It exists as ‘pre-existing components’ before its creation. An object attains Dharm parinamam (transformation of characteristic quality) when it is converted from its elemental form to a material form. For example, clay (elemental matter) attains its dharm parinamam when it is transformed into a pot (material matter). Similarly, gold (elemental matter) attains its dharm parinamam when it is converted into a gold ornament (material matter). There will be exceptional changes in the physical appearance and beauty of the gold. In this way, when Samyama reaches its peak in a yogi, he will experience something that cannot be experienced with his sense organs.

For example, when a yogi attains the peak of Samyama he will be able to see microscopic organisms, gems under the ocean, treasures beneath the earth, objects at a faraway distance, etc, could be seen in actual reality. You will attained a power of perception that beyond the five senses. Practicing Samyama will drive one to answer questions about himself. A yogi who has practiced Samyama to its peak will be able to see his self one-to-one. He will gain deep and divine wisdom that will solve self-inquiries like ‘who am I?’, ‘where did I come from?’, ‘where am I heading to?’ etc. Yogi attains siddhi and perfection of oneself by constant practice of Samyama. He reaches the self-realization state where he will find the authentic meaning of life and his self.
